The system we developed can prevent damage occurred during excavation work and alert admin the exact location of the event almost immediately.
Detectors installed on ground receive information from sensing line inserted in Smart Sheet, attached on top of pipeline, or Smart Prevention Sheet, installed about 50cm above pipeline, to monitor the facility. Detectors continue delivering signals until the very last Detector and sends signal to the server.
When signal between Detectors are delivered safely, it means not only system is in normal operation but also the facility itself.

What is UNDERCITY SOLUTION?
All buried underground pipes such as water and sewer pipe, gas pipe, communication pipe, electricity pipe, heating pipe, oil pipe, agricultural pipe, and etc make our lives convenient. But it is difficult to manage because it is buried and unseen. UNDERCITY SOLUTION is a system to prevent damage from other excavation work and detect leak in real-time. It can be classified with Smart Pipeline Monitoring System and SinkTree System.
What is Smart Pipeline Monitoring System?
It can be classified to BPS, LSS, and PSPS.
BPS System- Damage prevention system that is applicable in almost every pipeline.
LSS System- Real-time leak detection system.
PSPS System-Damage prevention and real-time leak detection system.
How does it restrain facility damage?
Damages occur during construction because we don’t know the location of buried pipes. To solve this problem, install Smart Prevention Sheet that contains sensing line on top of pipeline and manage it with Detector that is installed on ground. It alarms admin and excavation worker when sensing line is damaged to stop further accidents.
How do you check connections leak?
If there is no manufactural fault on a new pipe, the leak happens around pipe connections. Our system install Protection Cover which contains Leak Detection sensor or Sensor Protection Equipment on every pipe connections. The sensor operation method is by leak pressure therefore it can detect leak in real-time and alarm admin.
You can’t detect leak on other places other than pipe connections?
That is Correct. It will not detect leak other places other than pipe connections. The initial cause of main pipe leak is due to corrosion lead from neglect of damage. This problem can be solved with Smart Prevention Sheet. For example, we have found damaged locations in real-time at K-water Songsan Green City site with our system and restored promptly.
Why is the solution classified into various systems?
We divided our system to consider following these factors: importance of facility, possibility of damage, budget, and more. We recommend PSPS for water pipe to prevent damage and detect leak. We also recommend PSPS 600mm drain pipe for high possibility of pipe damage and ground subsidence but because the rate of connection leak tend to decrease for size more than 700mm, even when in long time use, BPS system or STS is recommended. BPS is recommended for storm water pipeline because even if there is leak there is no soil pollution.
Isn’t it pricy to apply the system?
System application fee depends on its method: PSPS, LSS, BPS, STS. It is expected to raise 3~8% from original budget calculating from standard of construction cost in Korea. The rate is high for small size pipe and low for large size pipe. Yet installation of magnetic marker and GIS system are unnecessary, so actual cost increase won’t be high.
Can it detect sewer pipeline ground subsidence and water inflow(for not pressure pipe)?
Current method to identify drain pipe connection leak is to insert CCTV into the pipe to investigate but it cost a lot and it can’t be checked in real-time. If our sensor is installed on every pipe connection, it can detect ground subsidence in real-time and prohibit and check water in flow.
I am worried about sensor malfunction.
Many people ask. What we developed is not electronics but a sensor physically made to disconnect when there is internal pressure. The Protection Cover and Sensor Protection Cover surrounding the sensor is high in water tightness. There will be no malfunction due to outside water inflow.
How long is the life cycle for Smart Prevention Sheet, Smart Sheet, and leak Detection Sensor?
The life cycle of sensing line buried underground is affected by external pressure and water. Sensing line we use is semi-permanent for using wire coated with tin and coated again with Teflon that is high on water-proof and weather proof and insert into butyl rubber attached glass fiber sheet. Also Leak Detection Sensor is semi-permanent because it is sealed with Protection Cover or Sensor Protection Cover.
Isn’t it impossible to monitor back end of pipeline if Leak Detection Sensor operates or cut wire isn’t fixed?
Those were the problems we faced with the previous method. New developed technology composes one network by installing Detector on every 800m in order. Even when situation stated above happens, the real-time monitoring is possible except for the damaged section.
What do you use to power the Detector?
Detector can operate by general electricity or power generated by sunlight. It is more efficient to use sunlight because it will operate by low electricity.
Don’t you have to frequently visit site to check remaining battery?
There is no need to visit site to check remaining battery. It can be checked online in real-time. Furthermore, it is designed to operate for 15 days (give or take) even during raining or snowing season when it is difficult to charge battery.
Can the facility be monitored as one facility even when various types of pipe are used?
It is our advantage that the system is designed to be efficiently manage as one facility network even when various types and sizes of pipe are used.
It is common to use nonmetal pipe and buried 5m below ground for drain and storm sewer pipe. Is exploration possible?
Exploration is possible within 10m underground using Smart Sheet or Smart Prevention Sheet. Therefore, there is no need to construct magnetic marker or locating cable separately.
How much will facility life lengthen when applying this system?
According to the statics about water pipe damage cause in United States, it appears to be 33% is from other construction work, 32% external corrosion, 10% internal corrosion. When looking into references from Ministry of Environment in Korea, other construction work 10.6%, and aging facility 87.3%. Because of this reason, after 30 years, the facility is classified aged and considered to be replaced. Our system can prevent damage from other construction and, at the same time, detect leak around pipe connections so we consider the life cycle to be lengthened as twice as original property.
Isn’t unnecessary to apply this system for city gas pipe higher than medium pressure since protection iron plate is laid and patrolled by safety admin regularly?
Korea is best for city gas safety management. Protection iron plate can prevent pipeline damage from excavation work but not from boring. According to Underground Safety Act, staring this year in Korea, requires conducting identification of ground subsidence by sing GPR once in 5 years which cause much expenses. Our system prevents safe accidents by managing facility in real-time and cut down budget that can be followed by GPR use. It can substitute something safety admin can’t patrol 24/7.
There is plastic protection plate for electricity pipe. Isn’t this system unnecessary?
In Korea, warning tape goes above the pipeline when constructing underground facility. For gas pipe, there is protection steel for damage prevention and plastic protection for high voltage electricity pipe. But reality is, except for protection steel plate, most of plastic protection plate or warning tape disappear during secondary excavation construction work. Therefore, when applying our system, real-time management is possible and reduce burden of expense due to use of GPR device.
Can it be used for agricultural pipe?
Agricultural pipe is used about 6 months in a year. It is mistaken to be ok even in leak and there is opinion that this system is unnecessary for agricultural pipe, yet it is more important to apply this system for agricultural pipe. It is important to carry water to the point where it is needed during drought season and because pipe overpass farmland it is more difficult to check location of pipe and leak. Our system can help to check GIS location data and efficiently manage the pipe network.
Can it be used for district heating insultation double pipe?
External pipe of insulation double pipe is PE and it is fragile in external shock. In case of damage, water flows in insulation material urethane and decrease insulation efficiency and cause restoration fee. Our BPS system can fundamentally solve those problems and reduce installation fee of magnetic marker and GIS.
Do you have countermeasure for soil pollution and other problems due to oil pipe leak?
Our system will alert the admin before the oil leak from pipe connection pollutes the soil.
Doesn’t it cost a lot to maintain the system?
There are battery replacement and communication fee to maintain the system. When we expect for battery life to be 5 years, it will cost 25 cents per meter and communication fee will be less than a dime even when considering 30 cents per meter when monitoring 4km (because the fee will only occur on the very last Detector).
Isn’t it hard to repair the sensing line?
What we send from Detector is signal. There is no risk for electric shock. Just cut off damaged sensing line with scissor and just reconnect with connecting jack and attach Protection Cover to protect the line from water inflow. Lastly, attach 10cm width butyl attached plate of glass fiber sheet.
Through what route does Admin and Excavation worker receive alarm?
Our system collect database to detect leak around pipe connections (Sensing line length from Detector, GIS, Details of facility, etc). At this time, Admin’s phone will be updated to the server. If sensing line is cut or leak detection sensor operates, it compares with collected database for accurate location and alert the admin in real-time. Excavation worker’s contact can be listed to the server before construction or they can download our app on their phone to receive real-time alert.
According to Underground Safety Act, it must check ground subsidence with GPR device in every 5 years. Can we do that with your system?
The range of GPR machine to check ground subsidence underground is down to 2 meters. Using sensing line inserted in Smart Prevention Sheet can detect down to 10 meters underground. We are fully aware of laying depth of Smart Prevention Sheet during construction and by comparing depth of Smart Prevention Sheet laid in the same area, 1 year later, is how we check its ground subsidence.
